“The ’90s Are All That” Countdown – “Clarissa Explains It All”

July 23, 2011 |  by  |  No Comments

At midnight on July 25, TeenNick will premiere its new programming block “The ’90s Are All That.” Airing from 12 to 4 a.m. Tuesday through Saturday, the block will be made up of all your favorite classic Nick shows. Check out the schedule here.

In celebration, we are devoting each day in the countdown to our favorite classic Nick shows.

Today: “Clarissa Explains It All”

Airing from March 23, 1991, to October 1, 1994, the sitcom followed Clarissa Darling as she went through her everyday teenage life. The show is best known for having Clarissa break the fourth wall and talk to the audience to give her take on the events. “Clarissa Explains It All” starred Melissa Joan Hart (Clarissa), Jason Zimbler (Ferguson W. Darling), Elizabeth Hess (their Mother, Janet), Joe O’Connor (their Father, Marshell), and Sean O’Neal (Sam Anders). Where are they now?

Melissa says it best in her Twitter description:

You may know me as Clarissa or Sabrina but my 2 boys Mason and Brady call me Mommy! Thats my favorite role yet!

Happily married and a mother of two, Melissa currently stars in the ABC Family series “Melissa & Joey” and will act in the upcoming comedy film “Wanderlust,” starring Paul Rudd and Jeniffer Aniston.

With an undergraduate degree in Business Administration and a graduate degree in Theatre Directing, Jason went on to found The Re-Theatre Instrument theater company in Portland, Oregon – re-imagining such plays as “Faust,” “King Lear,” and “Much Ado About Nothing.”

In each episode, Clarissa dealt with typical teenage problems like boys, acne, school, family, and her annoying brother. Below is a clip from the show’s pilot where we are introduced to Clarissa and her world.

After five seasons, fans easily felt like they were best friends with Malissa and could just climb up a ladder through her window to hang out with her everyday – like her best (platonic) friend Sam did.

And starting July 25 at midnight, Clarissa will once again explain life, the universe, and everything! Episodes will air each day of the first week of “The ’90s Are All That.”

How excited are you that “Clarissa Explains It All” is returning to television? Which of Melissa’s roles is your favorite?

To celebrate, we’ve included our favorite moment from any and every episode.

“The ’90s Are All That” Countdown – “The Adventures Of Pete & Pete”

July 18, 2011 |  by  |  1 Comment

At midnight on July 25, TeenNick will premiere its new programming block “The ’90s Are All That.” Airing from 12 to 4 a.m. Tuesday through Saturday, the block will be made up of all your favorite classic Nick shows. Check out the list of shows here.

In celebration, we’ve decided to devote each day in the countdown to a classic Nick show.

Today: “The Adventures of Pete & Pete”

Begun as minute-long shorts created by Will McRobb and Chris Viscardi in 1989 that aired between shows, the popular segment led to five half-hour specials, which then led to the show being picked up for three seasons between 1993 and 1996 on Nickelodeon. Reruns ran until around 1999.

Featuring two brothers both named Pete Wrigley who interacted with their family and friends in the surreal town of Wellsville, the show starred Mike Maronna, Danny Tamberelli, Alison Fanelli, Hardy Rawls, Judy Grafe, Toby Huss, and Michelle Trachtenberg. Where are they now?

Mike Maronna studied filmmaking at SUNY Purchase and has worked in front of and behind the camera on many projects. He played a burnout on both “Slackers” and “40 Days and 40 Nights” and played Stuart in a series of Ameritrade commercials. Most recently, he’s been working steadily as an electrician, with film credits on “Sex and the City,” “The Devil Knows You’re Dead,” and “Be Kind Rewind.”

Danny Tamberelli moved on to Nickelodeon’s “All That” and “Figure It Out” as well as a few TV series. He studied at Hampshire College and is currently in two bands, Jounce and Every Good Boy. Jounce released its new EP “Meet Me in the Middle” back in March.

Michelle Trachtenberg, who played Nona F. Mecklenberg in the second and third season of the show, went on to star in Nickelodeon Movies’ “Harriet the Spy” and has had a successful film and TV career ever since, with roles in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Gossip Girl.” Fun fact, Michelle also played the role of Elsie Soaperstein in Nickelodeon’s “Clarissa Explains It All.”

The show’s intro “Hey Sandy” was performed by and starred disbanded band Polaris. How much more ’90s could this song sound?

Every character on the show had over-the-top quirks like Mom’s metal plate in her skull that picked up random radio signals, Mr. Tastee the ice cream man and his Tastee Mobile, and the strongest man on earth, Artie.

The show also featured huge names like Adam West, Iggy Pop, Steve Buscemi, and LL Cool J.

Episode plots ranged everywhere from tracking down Mister Tastee, playing with a super garage door opener, and attempting to stay awake for days on end. Which was your favorite episode?

We’ve included one of our favorites “Hard Day’s Pete” below. Could this have been the beginning of Danny Tamberelli’s music career?

How excited are you for “The ’90s Are All That” to air on TeenNick?
