Spielberg And Jackson Talk “Tintin” And “Jurassic Park 4″ At Comic-Con

This Friday, director Steven Spielberg and producer Peter Jackson attended Comic-Con International in San Diego to hold a panel for their upcoming 3D motion-capture detective adventure film “The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn.” During the panel, Spielberg received an Inkpot Award, spoke with Jackson about the process of making “Tintin,” and showed footage of the film.

While Jackson, a native of New Zealand, was raised on the Herge’s Belgian adventure comics, Spielberg said he was not introduced to them until after filming “Raiders of the Lost Ark.”

The biggest challenges in making the film? Spielberg said he worked hard to ensure that he brought everything from the books into the film. For Jackson and his animation department WETA, the most work was in creating the character models as a hybrid of realistic textures, yet comic-book style.

With many skeptical about the animation style and techniques, how did the audience react to the footage? First, many commented that it was surprisingly adult: gritty, lethal gunplay, and real suspense. As for the animation, according to Cinema Blend, the 3D was spectacular, the animation great, and there was no uncanny valley (when the animation tries to look real, but there is something off that distracts the viewer and makes watching uncomfortable).

After talking “Tintin,” Spielberg made the exciting announcement that there will be a “Jurassic Park 4″ coming in the next few years. While not named, there is a writer currently working on the project and Spielberg will produce.

Check out the “Tintin” panel video and interviews with Spileberg, Jackson, and actors Simon Pegg and Nick Frost below.

Produced by Nickelodeon Movies, Paramount Pictures, and Columbia Pictures, “The Adventures of TIntin: Secret of the Unicorn” will hit theaters on October 26 in the UK and on December 23 in the US. It will be the first of a trilogy of “Tintin” films – the second set to release in 2013.

Steven Spielberg To Talk “The Adventures Of Tintin” At Comic-Con Tomorrow

July 21, 2011 |  by  |  No Comments

Tomorrow morning, director Steven Spielberg will visit Comic-Con International in San Diego, California, to speak at the “The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn” panel. There, he is expected to show clips of the film and talk about future plans for what he intends to be a trilogy of “Tintin” films.

Steven has never attended Comic-Con before, leading many to speculate that Steven could be following in the footsteps of “Avatar” director James Cameron. When people were unsure of the look and feel of “Avatar’s” use of motion-capture (having only seen 2-D trailers online), James screened a good portion of the film in 3-D at Comic-Con and the public’s fears were quelled. With the minimal footage shown in trailers for “The Adventures of Tintin” and, as many point out, the trailer editor’s decision to often avoid showing the characters moving their mouths while they talk, people are once again uneasy about the use of motion-capture in depicting the Belgian comics. Will Spielberg blow the audience out of the water at Comic-Con?

Many are also up-in-arms about the decision to give Captain Haddock, played by Andy Serkis, a Scottish accent. In both the comics and original cartoon, Haddock was never mentioned to be or portrayed as Scottish. That said, the film’s writers may be using Haddock’s Scottish background as a character trait essential for their story. “The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn” will be made up of material from three of creator Herge’s classic “Tintin” stories: “The Crab with the Golden Claws,” “The Secret of the Unicorn,” and “Red Rackham’s Treasure.” To string these stories into one coherent film, some understandable changes may have been made to the source material.

Personally, it is hard to believe that a collaboration between director Steven Spielberg (Indiana Jones), producer Peter Jackson (The Lord of the Rings), and writers Steven Moffat (Doctor Who), Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) and Joe Cornish (Attack the Block) could turn out to be a flop. But we can only wait and see.

What are your thoughts on “The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn?” Do you think it looks awesome or are you weary of the motion-capture feel?

“The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn” will be released in Europe on October 26 and the United States on December 23. Check out the trailers for the film below and let us know what you think.
