Scientists on the island of Borneo have discovered a new species of mushroom in the forests of Sarawak. The mushroom lives in the rainforest under trees, is often bright orange or purple, smells vaguely of fruit, and looks and feels porous and squeezable like a sponge. Unlike most fungi, the scientists could ring the water out of the mushroom and it would expand back to its original size.
The scientists named the mushroom the ‘SpongeBob mushroom’ and gave it the scientific name Spongiforma squarepantsii, after Nickelodeon’s hit show “SpongeBob SquarePants.”
What a great name! What do you think of the new SpongeBob mushroom?
