Dark Horse Comics recently spoke with “Avatar: The Last Airbender” creators Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko about the upcoming graphic novels and how they will help transition fans to the world of “Legend of Korra.”
When asked about the upcoming graphic novels, Michael answered:
We figured out a lot of the big events that needed to occur in order for the events in “Legend of Korra” to make sense. We wanted to have a more urban, technological setting and explore the theme of tradition vs. modernity. And since the story takes place 70 years after the original series, we wanted to show how the world had changed over time. This naturally led us to the setting of Republic City, a melting pot for all the world’s benders and non-benders, sort of what New York City was like in the 1920s and 30s. The graphic novels do a great job of showing where the seeds of Republic City begin and will continue to explore Aang and Zuko’s part in creating it.
And when asked what other stories from the universe they’d like to tell, Michael answered:
We know the fans are dying to know what happened to Zuko’s mom, so hopefully we will have an answer for them in the near future. And yes, we have ideas for the past and future of the Avatar world, but at this point it’s too early to talk about anything concrete. The Avatar universe is vast and full of stories to be told!
The graphic novel “Avatar: The Last Airbender Volume 1 — The Promise Part 1″ comes out January 25. Do you plan on picking up a copy?

UPDATE – No need to cross our fingers. Nickelodeon has confirmed that “Legend of Korra” will premiere in 2012!
Here’s some interesting news. According to a recent press release on MTV Networks’ Dutch website, we might be seeing Nickelodeon’s “The Last Airbender: Legend of Korra” as soon as the fall of 2012. The translated release states:
In 2012 there are already lots of new series in the pipeline. … In the fall are “Legends of Korra”, a spinoff of the hit series Avatar, and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”, a remake of the same name and original animation series from 1988, on the program.
While this in no way confirms the American release, it looks like a very strong possibility. We would expect the English version to come out at least at the same time as the others.
What do you think, would you be happy to see “Legend of Korra” in the fall? And how about the new “Ninja Turtles” (which is set to premiere as early as February in the US)?
Nickelodeon’s “The Last Airbender: Legend of Korra” was originally set for an October 2011 premiere, but was pushed back for an additional 14 episodes to be made, bring the upcoming series to 26 episodes. The show’s first trailer premiered online back in July and this month the opening titles were leaked online and quickly pulled down – only helping to spark interest in the show.
Now, with 2012 just around the corner, fans are anxiously awaiting an announcement from Nickelodeon regarding the official release date. Will the show premiere mid 2012? Or as far back as 2013?
Fans on tumblr have even started sending Nickelodeon messages in its website’s “Report A Concern” form – joking that they are concerned for their own health if they do not hear a release date soon, hoping to spur some reaction from Nick.
It is possible that a trailer/promo will air during Nickelodeon’s “Best Week on TV,” which airs from December 26 to the 31 and promises to give special looks shows like “How To Rock” and “House of Anubis” season 2 that will premiere in 2012. If not, Nickelodeon might have a few concerned fans.
What do you think? Even if the show does get a release date as late as 2013, do you want to know about it now?
Which would you rather see: a release date or more footage?
