“The ’90s Are All That” Countdown – “Are You Afraid Of The Dark?”
At midnight on July 25, TeenNick will premiere its new programming block “The ’90s Are All That.” Airing from 12 to 4 a.m. Tuesday through Saturday, the block will be made up of all your favorite classic Nick shows. Check out the list of shows here.
In celebration, we’ve decided to devote each day in the countdown to a classic Nick show.
Today: “Are You Afraid of the Dark?”
Originally a joint production between Canadian company Cinar and the American company Nickelodeon, the horror/fantasy series aired from October 31, 1990 to June 11, 2000.
Each episode began with a group of children forming the Midnight Society sitting around a campfire in the woods. One member of the group would tell the others a scary, theme-based story and that story would play out for the audience. The original Midnight Society was made up of Gary (Ross Hull), Betty Ann (Raine Pare-Coull), Kiki (Jodie Resther), Frank (Jason Alisharan), Kristen (Rachel Blanchard), David (Nathaniel Moreau), and Eric (Jacob Tierney). Where are they now? Ross Hull is currently a weather anchor for CTV Southwestern Ontario and Rachel Blanchard has acted in project likes “Snakes on a Plane” and “Flight of the Conchords.”
How fitting that TeenNick decided start the block each night at midnight! If you didn’t try to start up a Midnight Society with your friends back in the ’90s, here’s your chance.
Any fan of “Are You Afraid of the Dark?” will remember just how creepy the intro was. The foggy, blue atmosphere. The eerie tones and children’s laughter. THAT FREAKING CLOWN! And how did they get the match to spark on its own?
Often, the stories told were cheesy or just absurd, like getting trapped in a video game/mall, a ghost and its beloved bicycle, and a terrorizing clown doll. In many ways, the stories resembled R.L. Stine’s “Goosebumps” books and episodes, but a personality all on their own.
Filled with stereotypical scaredy-cats, bullies, overactors, and awkward romances, each episode is sure to please.
Are you a fan of “Are You Afraid of the Dark?” Did you find it scary? Are you really afraid of the dark? How excited are you for “The ’90s Are All That?”
Submitted for the approval of the Midnight Society, we share with you one of our favorite episodes: “The Tale of the Sorcerer’s Apprentice.”
