With “Kung Fu Panda 2″ a hit at the box office, DreamWorks has announced that they are now hard at work for a sequel to the greatly successful “How to Train Your Dragon.” The film opened in theaters back in 2010, and the sequel is now slated for a June 20, 2014, release.
Writer and director Dean DeBlois has stated that the script has gone through multiple revisions and that storyboard artists are now working on how to tell the story visually.
DeBois also hinted that the franchise has been expanded into three films:
There are certain characters and situations that come into play in the second film that will become much more crucial to the story by the third. Other threads from the first will begin to pay themselves off in the second. It’s my way of guaranteeing that it is not another adventure that we throw the same five or six characters into, that it feels like part of a larger story.
The sequel will follow the heroes Hiccup and Toothless on their adventures off of the small island as Hiccup makes his transition to leader of the Viking clan. It will star Jay Baruchel, Craig Ferguson, Jonah Hill, T.J. Miller, America Ferrera, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Gerard Butler, and Kristen Wiig.
