  1. Yes, twice. The first time, alone, the night it opened. The second time, a week later, on a Sunday afternoon, with two children, age five, a teddy bear and Baby Pea Pod, age three, and their mother, the children’s, not the stuffed creatures. All five of us wore 3D glasses, thanks to an accommodating ticket seller. It was a sight. Although not a part of the movie, the experience of hearing the little boy, sitting next to me, shout, “I want to see it again, now,” as the credits rolled, brought me great joy, and a chuckle.

As a whole, I was impressed by the realism of the film, it seemed to me to depict, accurately, and with humor, the way the world works. The weird thoughtlessness of villainy was painted brilliantly.

Margo was my favorite. I love her. She reminded me of the little girl in the theatre, sitting next to the little boy, sitting next to me. I have a video of her, the day she learned to swing, all by herself. As I encourage her, and at the moment she realizes she is really swinging, she says, “I love you,” and I say, “ I love you, too.” When Margo hugged Gru, and said, “I love you,” it moved me more than the words of the little girl I love. That is the kind of power art has in our lives. Miranda Cosgrove is not only lovely, Mr. Carell, she is an awesome woman.
